On March 13, the cardinals of the Catholic Church, gathered to elect a successor to a living Pope for the first time in 600 years, announced a dramatic shift. By elevating Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina to become Pope Francis the 266th Pontiff, the cardinals were naming the first-ever Pope from the growing New World to take the helm of the church at a crucial moment.

It was a stunning move by a 2,000-year-old institution that has immense influence—with 1.2 billion adherents worldwide—and huge problems, including a decade-old sex-abuse scandal that has shattered faith in the institution, a shortage of priests and secular trends that have drained the church of members and challenged its relevancy in a changing world.

From the shocking decision by Pope Benedict XVI to retire, to the introduction of Pope Francis, from the back streets of Buenos Aires to the front row at St. Peter's Square, reporters from The Wall Street Journal have chronicled these dramatic weeks in the life of the oldest institution in the world. Now, in a new e-book, Journal reporters will present a detailed, timely and original biography of the new Pope Francis, as well as new insight on the bargaining and drama that surrounded his rise. Pope Francis will present the full, in-depth story of the church's change in direction and the man charged with leading it, and consider how Pope Francis might address the years of scandal and shortcomings while leading Catholics worldwide toward a deeper faith.

I just started reading it yesterday after it arrived on my Kindle Paper White. I first read the excerpts in the Weekend Wall Street Journal and thus decided to go shopping for it. It is immensely readable. You get pulled into the narrative right away , As a non-catholic but christian I am impressed by this man and what he can do for the whole world as a spokesman for chrisitianity as a whole. However, I have noticed a few a flaws. Apparently the editiors have not done their proof reading as I have come across several spelling errors in the book. They may have rushed this out..not sure how producing e-books is different than print publishing. Also the formatting on some pages or paragraphs do not ident well on the Kindle page as I would have expected to see on the paper version of the book when reading it. But still an excellent read so far.

Pope Francis From the End of the Earth to Rome edition by The Staff of The Wall Street Journal Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I like the fact that the new pope seems to be trying to act like Jesus by being humble and honoring people from the lowest classes, such as jail inmates and those in abject poverty. I am perplexed by his apparent conflicted reactions to the problem of apparent sexual abuse of minors by priests which seem to be excused or denied by cardinals. I believe that in the long run this pope will encourage and rein over a resurgance of the faithful in the Catholic Church.
I found “on Heaven and Earth” to be a most inspiring book. I was especially moved by the format, a dialog between the current Pope who was a cardinal or archbishop at the time that the dialog occurred and a conservative rabbi. It shows the respect for the brotherhood of mankind regardless of one’s religious affiliation is needed in our time. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in spiritual matters. The authors make interesting interpretations of passages from the old and new testaments.
I enjoyed this book, and found it met my expectations very well. I expected a "news organization's" view of him, and a general picture of the man assembled in a hurry. I suppose it could be called a "biographical sketch" or some such. The book seems unbiased, accurate, and is a quick read.I'm not Catholic, but have high hopes for this Pope, and keep hearing about great moves on his part already.
As a new face of the Catholic Church emerges on the world, many are curious about the man, his personality, philosophy and his style of leading the over one billion Roman Catholics throughout the globe. This very objective and balanced look at Pope Francis will give the reader meaningful insights into who he is and will be to the world...not who the media would like him to be. Well researched and well written.
This is a respectful look at the new Holy Father. This book will interest persons of all faiths because Pope Francis is a world leader, not just the leader of the Roman Catholic community. His story is most inspirational and I was particularly interested in exploring how a religious servant in a remote part of the world, found himself Pope. Readers with an interest in Latin American studies will want to read this book.
I felt this book got too much into the " he said, she said" of sexual abuse cases as opposed to simply relating this sin of all sins to the popes stance on it. Also, too much was made of the "dirty war" politics in Latin America. A more simple explanation of what that was, how it formed our new popes opinions and thinking would suffice. A bit too much detail I thought. As I conclude this book, I felt a bit empty. A definite lack of substance about our new pope and his new direction. But then, he is still in his freshman year as a pope! Pope Francis sits on the threshold of an opportunity of Church reform from within. I pray his tenure as pope is fruitful.
I liked this book as it provides an easy to read bio of our Holy Father. It gave me a good foundational understanding of this pope for whom my initial joy over his humility became a an unsettled concern that the world has given itself yet another proponent of 'Rob from the rich and give to the poor'. Though this book didn't answer my questions about how our pope views social justice, it parted some curtains for me. I can do further research and listen carefully to Francis' words and watch his actions. I want to believe that the life experiences of our beloved Pope JPII would serve as a guide for Francis as he leads humanity toward social justice wrought by free men and women and not by governments, which will never, ever accomplish the work.
